How to identify an American Goldfinch
Breeding males are bright yellow with a black cap and black-and-white wings; females and winter birds are a softer olive-tan. They have a bouncy, roller-coaster flight and a sweet per-chic-o-ree call.
How to attract goldfinches
Goldfinches adore nyjer (thistle) seed and black-oil sunflower. Use a nyjer feeder or a mesh sock — they'll cling and feed for ages. Plant native coneflowers and sunflowers and leave the seed heads standing into fall.
