Painted Bunting: Facts & Where to See Them

Framed Painted Bunting canvas print

Often called the most beautiful bird in North America, the male Painted Bunting looks almost too colorful to be real. Here's how to know them and where to find them.

How to identify a Painted Bunting

The male is unmistakable: a blue head, lime-green back, and a brilliant red breast and rump — like a living paint palette. Females and young birds are a bright, uniform yellow-green, beautiful in their own subtle way.

Where and how to see them

Painted Buntings breed in the south-central US and along the Southeast coast in summer. To attract them, offer white millet in a tube or hopper feeder near dense, brushy cover — they're shy and like an easy escape route. Early morning is your best chance.
