Ruby-throated Hummingbird: Facts & How to Attract Them

Framed Ruby-throated Hummingbird canvas print

A blur of green, a flash of red, the hum of wings — the Ruby-throated Hummingbird is a backyard marvel. Here's how to recognize them and keep them coming back.

How to identify a Ruby-throated Hummingbird

Tiny and iridescent green above, with a white belly. The male shows a brilliant ruby-red throat (gorget) that can look black until the light hits it; females have a plain white throat. They hover, dart, and even fly backwards.

How to attract hummingbirds

Hang a nectar feeder filled with a simple 1 part sugar to 4 parts water mix (no dye, no honey). Clean it every few days in hot weather. Plant red and orange tubular flowers — bee balm, salvia, trumpet vine — and they'll find you.
