Soft gray, big black eyes, and a jaunty crest — the Tufted Titmouse is one of the friendliest, most acrobatic visitors at any feeder. Here's how to know them and bring them in.
How to identify a Tufted Titmouse
A small gray bird with a pointed crest, pale belly, rusty flanks, and large dark eyes that give it a curious, expressive look. Listen for its clear, whistled peter-peter-peter song ringing from the trees.
How to attract titmice
Titmice love black-oil sunflower seed, peanuts, and suet. They're bold and will visit small perch feeders happily, often grabbing one seed and flying off to crack it open. They also use nest boxes — try one with a 1¼ inch hole.
